MOUNT VERNON — Truck traffic along downtown’s Main Street was topic of conversation for the Mount Vernon City Council again Monday night.
During a committee meeting, Mike Hillier said that while the city is making some strides in removing the big trucks from the business district, as well as residential neighborhoods, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
“We think we are fixing it,” Hillier said. “Obviously there are still problems. We need something short term and we need something long term.”
An idea for a short-term solution that has been batted around in previous committee meetings is to hang signs in the dock areas of local manufacturers warning drivers that GPS devices often given the wrong directions that could lead to tickets.
“I think that’s a real good idea,” said Janis Seavolt. “I think it’s better than ticketing because I don’t think they do it on purpose.”
“I don’t think it would hurt a thing,” said Susan Kahrl. “It won’t fix the problem but it might help.”
Mount Vernon Police Chief Mike Merrilees addressed council and said the number of trucks in the downtown area has declined.
