MOUNT VERNON — The Junior Fair and 4-H dog show took place Monday evening, which included classes such as agility, canine fashion show, musical sitting and downing, as well as the presentation of awards for obedience, showmanship and canine knowledge.
Melissa Layton, of Centerburg Livestock 4-H club, was the only entry in the advanced agility class, with her Jack Russell terrier, Angel. This was Layton’s fourth year in 4-H and her third year doing agility with Angel. Layton explained that an advanced course includes weave poles and a teeter.
“I love working with a dog and seeing improvement. I love working well together,” Layton said. “It’s very rewarding. Anyone with a dog could enjoy it.”
Layton and Angel received a high point award later in the evening.
In the costume class, Anna Blubaugh, 11, of the Contenders 4-H club, was especially happy to have had the chance to show her sheltie, Harley. This marked Blubaugh’s first year in 4-H and, unfortunately, her horse stepped on her foot after her last pre-fair riding practice. Though unable to ride, Blubaugh was still able to participate in the fair with Harley. The pair dressed as Little Bo Peep and her sheep for the nursery rhyme themed costume class.
