MOUNT VERNON — Dairy, goat and poultry shows — along with equestrian competitions — highlighted junior fair activities Monday at the Knox County Fair. The swine show took place Monday evening.
For the first time, the dairy competition combined junior fair contestants, open show participants and pee wee competitors, such as 4-year-old Ella Bouton. She won a blue ribbon with her Holstein and thought that was “great.”
Logan Small, age 8, also participated, and his mother, Melanie Small, said he was “tickled” to be able to show at the fair with the 4-Hers.
“It’s really great,” Melanie said. “This gives the little ones some good experience and they learn a lot watching the older kids.”
The Supreme Junior Champion dairy entry belonged to Colston Wilson, Lighthouse 4-H Club, Centerburg. He was, of course, very happy to take home a trophy.
Daniel Alden, 16, with the Creative Kids of Danville, won Supreme Senior Champion with his brown Swiss. “It’s fun to win,” he said. “It feels pretty good.”
Dairy judge Chris Lahmers explained that the champion cows he chose were those he believes can do best in their breed at other competitions. He checked for confirmation such as correctness of udder, feet and legs and also evaluated the animals for a “refined” and “feminine” overall appearance.
Although a market goat or two had a baaaad day, Justin Howell, Danville’s Barn Yard Bunch, did not. His market goat was named Grand Champion and that, Howell said, “feels really good.” He said it was worth all the time he spent working with his goat, walking it every night for at least a quarter mile and bracing it [getting it used to the proper show ring stance].
Hannah Stewart, Freddie 4-H Nation, earned the trophy for the Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat. Brett Sockman, Centerburg Livestock, won Champion Production Meat Doe honors, and Justin Howell had the Reserve Champion Production Doe.
Judge Bob Hare said he assesses the goats on muscle, correctness of structure and soundness in feet and legs. Eye appeal comes into play as well.
