MOUNT VERNON — The 2012 Junior Fair Draft Horse and Pony Show was held Sunday, opening day of the Knox County Fair. Competition classes ranged from Trail in Hand Leading to large harness four-wheel pulling and some competitive horseback classes. And the horses ranged from miniatures and ponies to Percherons.
In Knox County, Percherons are the most common draft horses because the national Percheron Horse Association of America office is located in Fredericktown. However, the fair classes were also represented by Begians and Clydesdales, too.
There were 26 classes for the Junior Fair draft horses and the event opened with the Light Harness Class, literally a lighter weight harness pulling a two-wheel cart.
Judging the entire show was Richard Rau from Toledo. Rau is an official on the 4-H Judges list and judges events all over the country. However, he often judges general horse classes.
4-H members were permitted to have adult helpers if the 4-H member felt more comfortable or if the adult owner prefered to be present. However, an adult rider may not instruct or take the lines during the contestant’s time in the arena, unless it is necessary.
