MOUNT VERNON — The youth of Knox County once again displayed their skills and knowledge on Tuesday at the Knox County Fair in the numerous junior fair livestock judging competitions. Whether it was poultry, sheep, goats, dairy feeders or beef steers, the youth put forth their best efforts in the show arenas, displaying the finest examples of competition and sportsmanship.
The poultry showmanship showcased the exhibitors’ talents at showing their turkeys, broilers, ducks and fancy chickens. Overseeing the activity at the small animal barn was barn superintendent Crystal McElhaney.
“I make sure the kids have their questions answered and the animals are fed and watered,” said McElhaney about her job. “It’s been wonderful. There’s been a lot of new kids this year. And we were told by the fair board members that they all were doing a good job.”
Showing a single chicken and a pen of three in his first year was Thomas Caputo, 9, of Red Brush 4-H Club. “I was a little nervous,” said Thomas. “But I like seeing all the different animals at the fair.”
The extreme heat during the fair did take its toll on a few animals. OSU Extension Agent-Agriculture Troy Cooper said that unfortunately a few broilers were lost in the heat. “But the kids have been great. And there have been a lot of good quality animals,” said Cooper.
