MOUNT VERNON — Levi Haines of Centerburg, a member of the Midnight Regulators 4-H Club, successfully defended his senior Ground Roping title Wednesday morning at the Knox County Fair. Haines made it look easy, lassoing the fake calf on each of his four throws.
Haines, 16, attributed his victory to “lots of practice” and extra competition, having competed at the Ohio State Fair and other events, as well as at the county fair each year.
“I had good coaches,” Haines said. “A couple professional ropers taught me.”
He explained that once you know the basics about how each part of the rope performs, the roper then needs to “find his own groove.”
He has taught other 4-H’ers how to rope and is looking forward to competing next year against his “protégé,” Brett Thomas, 14, of Freedom Riders 4-H.
