MOUNT VERNON — It was a big day for 4-H’ers at the Knox County Fair’s annual Sale of Champions. The larger animals were sold at the auction, raising a huge amount of money for the participants.
The Grand Champion Market Dairy Steer was won by Lee Burke. Burke is from Mount Vernon and a member of Radiant Farmers 4-H Club. His steer weighed 1,391 pounds and was purchased for $3.85 per pound by B&B Farm Services of Fredericktown and Shipley Seed Services of Mount Vernon. B&B was represented by Tom Boyd and Mark Overholt, Trish Levering, and Jamie Shipley represented Shipley Seed.
Burke, 15, has shown steers for seven years. His advice for how to have a champion?
“You have to have a good calf,” he said.
The Supreme Champion Dairy Cow represented the species in the sale. Daniel Alden was awarded the honor and received 15 percent of the proceeds from the Dairy Product Sale which sold for $4,250 to Movers & Shuckers of Fredericktown and a total of 25 to 30 contributors who donated to make the purchase. Movers & Shuckers representatives included Jeremy Freer, Tracy Rhoderick, Scott Mast and Tim Dudgeon.
The Junior Fair Dairy Service unit provided the large basket gift for the buyers. The basket included cheese, crackers, fresh corn and a number of other food items.
