MOUNT VERNON — The city is looking at a way of saving up to $150,000 or $160,000 annually on its electrical bill.
The city and other large users were not able to be part of the electric aggregation program in which residential customers saved money on their bills, but the city may be able to save by negotiating with suppliers to serve the city’s large accounts, Mayor Richard Mavis said. The city’s aggregator is negotiating with suppliers for the city’s larger accounts, including the water and sewer plants, and the police and fire department buildings.
“We may be able to save $150,000 to $160,000 by bidding the larger accounts,” Mavis said.
Mavis also noted at his weekly press briefing that city customers of AEP Retail energy will be receiving a letter from the company telling them its name has changed to AEP Energy. The change comes in the wake of the purchase by AEP Retail Energy of BlueStar Energy Solutions located in Chicago.
The letter will explain that customer agreements will remain the same; just the name has changed.
Building not yet city’s
Safety-Service Director Dave Glass, who was present for most of the session, said that the building at the corner of Coshocton Avenue and Vernonview Drive is not yet city property.
Council has authorized the purchase of the building, which used to house, among other businesses, 3 Bakers, 8 Sisters Bakery and a car lot. Glass said it will probably be another month before the city acquires the property, which is needed for the next round of improvements on Coshocton Avenue.
