MOUNT VERNON — It started with nine smart kids, a passel of brushes and cloths, about a gallon of water and three filthy horses, and it ended with three happy turtles and three immaculate horses. A trio calling themselves the Purple Turtles were Friday’s champions in one of the most unique events of the Knox County Junior Fair, the Equine Groom and Clean Contest.

The contest started off a busy day for young equestrians who had their regularly scheduled events on the calendar as well as the popular Versatility competition that was held over because of Thursday afternoon’s storms.
