MOUNT VERNON — Colton Walker, a senior at Mount Vernon High School, is the 2012 winner of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club’s Dave Greer Award.

The $500 check is presented each year to a high school senior based on citizenship and agricultural activities.

“It’s an awesome award,” said Walker. “It feels great, especially knowing the previous winner (Junior Fair King Gavin Rundell).”

Walker added, “I didn’t think there was any way I would win. I saw some of the other nominees going in for interviews and I didn’t think I had a chance.”

“We’re extremely proud of him,” said his parents, Lee and Mary Ann Walker.

Kiwanis Vice President Kathy Kasler said the award is one way Kiwanis shows its support of youth in the community and said that choosing a winner was a tough decision for the selection committee.

“We have a lot of active kids in our community,” Kasler said.
