HOWARD — Residents in the East Knox Local School District will be asked to approve a combination earned income/property tax levy in the upcoming general election on Nov. 6. This was the decision made when the East Knox Local Board of Education met in regular session Wednesday evening at the board office.
District treasurer Jessica Busenburg presented simulation comparisons gathered from information received from the Ohio Department of Taxation in looking at the district’s five-year forecast. Options of a 0.5 percent and a 0.75 percent income tax were studied before a decision was made which levy to pursue.
Board president Renee McDaniel stated that she heard where people believed that too much was being asked for in previous levies based on income tax or property tax alone.
“Our thinking is we’ve reduced those amounts on both sides; now we’re asking for it in one levy, but we’re trying not to overburden any one group,” said McDaniel. “We didn’t want to hit the property taxpayers any more than we have to. We are asking for these amounts just to balance our budget and to have enough funds so we can bring back some programs which have been cut.”
