MOUNT VERNON — Due to the outpouring of support from area church members, individuals and corporate donors such as Ariel and Walmart, at least 1,300 backpacks have been filled with school supplies and are ready to be distributed to needy school children from all around the county.

Gail Dement of the Vineyard Church of Knox County said volunteers have used school supply lists to fill the backpacks with supplies specific to the students’ grade level. Most are designated for elementary school students, but Dement said parents of junior high students needing supplies should call the church office to check on availability.

The backpack event will take place on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. and there are three giveaway sites this year: Mount Vernon, Howard and Danville, and the children must be present to receive the backpacks.

Mount Vernon area students can pick up their backpacks at Vineyard Church of Knox County, 806 Harcourt Road.

Residents of the East Knox district are invited to the Journey Church, 23480 Schenck Creek Road.

The Danville site is located at the Grace Brethren Church, 302 E. Ross St.

Amy Hudson, coordinator of the event, explained the churches’ motivation for the backpack giveaway. “God’s unconditional love for us is overwhelming,” she said. “Those who follow him are called to love just as he does. One way to do that is by blessing children and families with backpacks and school supplies.”

“We are also blessed by the giveaway,” Hudson continued. “It’s so fun to see the kids get their backpacks. They are so excited.”

Participants will also be given coupons for free haircuts on Aug. 12, at Head to Toe Salon.

Anyone interested in helping out at the giveaway, or wanting more information, should call the office at the Vineyard Church of Knox County at 392-8463 or Cindy Lampley at 501-8208.
