MOUNT VERNON — Susan Kahrl was described as a woman who draws people to her by Knox County Democratic Women’s co-chairperson Penny Rauzi, Tuesday night. Kahrl was presented with the Judge Elaine Mayhew Award for Community Service at the Knox County Educational Service Center on Martinsburg Road.

Rauzi described the late Judge Mayhew as her idol, both as a lawyer and a judge. The award, she explained, was created “to honor a local woman who exemplifies the philosophy of community service that was such a large part of Mayhew’s time as a lawyer and judge in Knox County.”

President of the Knox County Democratic Women, Rose Cole, reviewed Kahrl’s many accomplishments including 36 years of teaching middle school and 35 years directing the middle school talent show. She currently serves on Mount Vernon City Council and is active with the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival, and the Elixir Chautauqua Series including performing historical character re-enactments.
