MOUNT VERNON — No charges have been filed following an incident Saturday where a Fredericktown man was assaulted and left bleeding on South Gay Street.
The 52-year-old man told the News he was traveling north on Gay Street about noon Saturday when an unidentified male suspect attempted to cross the street in front of him. He said he slammed on his brakes to avoid striking the suspect, who then confronted him at his window, slamming his fist on the car.
The victim got out of his car, told the suspect he was going to call 9-1-1 before having his cell phone slapped out of his hand. After attempting to pick up the phone, the next thing he recalls is waking up on the ground with blood coming from his eye and nose.
Numerous witnesses were on the scene with one of them calling 9-1-1. The victim was taken to Knox Community Hospital and later to Grant Medical Center where stitches were put in his face. A CAT Scan revealed a broken bone near his eye and facial surgery is being scheduled.
MVPD Captain George Hartz said that no charges have been filed at this time. When asked, Hartz would not confirm the name of a possible suspect. The case remains under investigation.
