FREDERICKTOWN — A smoldering wood pile probably set fire to a 12- to 15-acre grass field Sunday afternoon on Fredericktown-Amity Road, just east of Knox Lake Road. The property is owned by Michelle Doup. A neighbor, Matt Earnst called in the fire at 3:20 p.m.

The Fredericktown Community Volunteer Fire Department called for mutual aid from Jefferson Township at Butler and from Mount Vernon for grass trucks. Fredericktown had three engines, two grass trucks and an ATV with 150 gallons of water.

The 18 firefighters on scene put out the fire in under an hour. They needed 1,500 gallons of water to douse the fire.
