MOUNT VERNON — Nine months ago, Rolls-Royce announced plans to erect a new office building at the northwest corner of Sandusky and Chestnut streets. Now, Mount Vernon residents will get to see that new building take shape in a mere 10 days.
Construction has actually taken much longer, but that was in the factory, where the 52 modules that will be assembled this week were readied. Now, the modules are here, and cranes are ready to lift them into place to create the 37,000-square-foot building.
Assembly was scheduled to begin Monday, but rain showers forced a delay. Several of the plastic-covered modules are sitting next to the building site. Others are being stored near the city’s soccer fields at the end of West High Street. Assembly should begin today.
Rolls-Royce manager for External Affairs Gary Hyman said they are still targeting the end of November as the move-in date for the new facility.
According to the schedule Rolls-Royce put out in a newsletter in early August, interior construction work was to begin Sept. 4, a day before the last module is set in place.
The new building will replace the Tech Center, an old building which originally housed the Mount Vernon Bridge Co. and has been extensively remodeled over the years.
