MOUNT VERNON — Presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at the Republican nominating convention and in his speech he said that a united America “can unleash an economy that will put Americans back to work, that will once again lead the world with innovation and productivity.” Some local Knox County residents shared their reactions to the convention and to Romney’s speech on Friday.
One local shop saleswoman whose first name is Beth wanted to remain anonymous, but not because she didn’t have an opinion.
“My husband had a thriving company that came to a screeching halt under Obama’s administration,” she stated. She and her husband moved to Mount Vernon in 2001.
Beth said she watched quite a bit of the convention and knew before it started how she would vote. “I think Romney is pure class and people will be intimidated by his success,” she said, “I definitely would have voted for Romney anyway.”
“When Obama was elected,” she added, “ a man said to me that we would see this country get violent and see production stop, and we have.” She also added that she liked Ann Romney because “she rides horses.”
She explained, “It takes some kahunas to ride and she’s also a woman of class.”
Mount Vernon resident Dick Porter said he watched Romney’s speech. Porter is a registered Republican but he said he considers himself an independent because he has voted for Democrats before.
