MOUNT VERNON — Recently the Mount Vernon YMCA revealed their new adult fitness center and the changes that it inspired. Nationally YMCAs strengthen communities through fitness and by bringing people together, and the revitalization at the Mount Vernon Y is consistent with the reshaping that its members personally enjoy.

The Mount Vernon Y offers programs for everyone, preschool to adult, and the new fitness center is ideal for strength and cardio training. Updates at the Y also include a new community board room and a completely remodeled top floor that includes new interests for children.

Nick Clark, the executive director at the YMCA, said, “We’ve moved the fitness center from downstairs to the former gym. It was a better flow for our facility and gives people better light.”

Clark said that when the board evaluated facility usage, they realized that members often did not need to use the locker rooms, so the fitness center didn’t need to be downstairs near the pool locker rooms.

With it relocated on the first floor, members are now greeted at the front desk, and nearby the fitness center and adult fitness classes are all on one level.

The fitness center now has windows to let in natural light. There are also big screen televisions for members using the treadmills, new cardio equipment and new strength training equipment.

Board president Aaron Boggs stated, “We wanted to make changes in a way that will bring back families; so now, in a room off the fitness center, there’s a youth activity room with television, iPads, and Wii.” While their parents are working out, older children can enjoy their own space.
