MOUNT VERNON — When employees of Ryan’s arrived at work on Tuesday, they had no idea that would be their last day. Staff was informed of the decision Tuesday and attended an employee meeting this morning to discuss the closing.
Management turned away representatives of the News this morning and instructed the former workers not to discuss the meeting with the media.
A sign on the door read, “This location has been permanently closed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we sincerely appreciate your patronage over the years.”
Ruth Wright, of Mount Vernon, called the News Tuesday afternoon after eating at the restaurant and learning of the closure. Her Sunday School class has enjoyed meeting at the restaurant for several months.
“I feel very sympathetic toward the employees,” she stated, “some of them have been there a long time and suddenly they’re cut off. It’s painful.”
Wright said her waitress’s name was Hannah and she served the group when they met at the restaurant.
“She took good care of us and was very efficient,” said Wright. “When she told us, her eyes were wet.”
