MOUNT VERNON — Executive director of the Knox County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Pat Crow spoke to Knox County Commissioners Teresa Bemiller and Roger Reed on Thursday. He informed the commissioners that the economic impact of tourism in the county has grown.
Crow presented 2011 results from a study performed every two years that also compares some of the data from the previous study. The report presented to the commissioners also includes findings from 2009 and included data for the state.
The report found that tourism in Knox County generated business sales of $83 million in 2011. Tourism was described as including transportation, recreation, retail, lodging, food and beverages. The 2011 findings represent an increase from the 2009 study of $7 million.
The study documents the economic crisis of 2009 but the 2011 findings demonstrate a peak approximate to the tourism revenue of 2006.
“In 2009, everything changed,” stated Bemiller, “This is very encouraging.”
Reed added, “This demonstrates that tourism definitely impacts our budget.”
