FREDERICKTOWN — There’s something about hot, humid days and cold, juicy tomatoes that fairly screams summer, and the celebration of both the season and the tasty veggie continued Friday at the 36 Annual Fredericktown Tomato Show.
It wouldn’t be a summer festival in Ohio without a chance of bad weather, but fortunately the weatherman overpromised and under elivered in the thunderstorm category. Folks had to scramble for cover a little before 5 p.m., when a storm cell rolled across the county, but the rain was brief and midway rides sprang to life after a short delay to mop up. Another line of storms was well off to the west, threatening to interfere with the Project Roundtable concert set for dusk. But for as long as the skies would allow, everyone took the show’s theme “Live Like There’s No Tomorrow” to heart.
Late afternoon activities centered around local children, beginning with a test of kid power in the pedal tractor pull. Competition was held for ages 4-5, 6-7 and 8-9, with 10-12 year olds held over for Saturday’s festival-ending schedule. Several kids managed to power the sled almost across the breadth of Main Street, but the mightiest was saved for last.
