MOUNT VERNON — Only three department heads showed up for the Knox County Commissioners’ quarterly department heads meeting.
Darrel Severns, head of the Knox County Regional Planning Commission; Kevin Henthorne, director of the Knox County Veterans Service Office; and John Alberts, director of Buildings and Grounds, reported on what’s happening in their departments.
Alberts reported that some initial figures about replacing the exterior lighting at the sheriff’s office/county jail complex look promising. By replacing the existing pole lights and wall packs, the county could save at least 584 watts of power.
The biggest factors would be the decrease in the pole light wattage from 460 to 154, and the wall pack wattage from 185 to 40, but retain the present illumination.
The electrical firm working on the project has estimated the replacements could pay for themselves in about two years.
Alberts said he didn’t know when the project might move forward or when they would look at exterior lighting at other facilities.
County Commissioner Teresa Bemiller said the project sounds like it might be worth pursuing, noting that the shortest days of the year are coming up in December and January, but no decisions can be made until they know the cost of the switch.
