MOUNT VERNON — Max Winters’ dream was remembered after he passed away in May at the Ohio Eastern Star Home on Gambier Road. Winters always wanted to start a food pantry, according to Eastern Star nurses. When he passed away, the staff decided to hold a food drive for him.
Wednesday, Eastern Star and Odyssey Hospice representatives loaded a van with the food to transport it to Interchurch Social Services for the food pantry. The food drive started with a Christmas in July theme, but Eastern Star administrator Michele Engelbach said, “Because of the overwhelming response, we decided to continue it another month.”
The Ohio Eastern Star Home provides skilled care and treatment to individuals in a comfortable home-like environment and have cottages and apartments as well as nursing facilities. Winters made it his home for three years.
