MOUNT VERNON — More than 125 volunteers enjoyed a lunch provided by Knox Community Hospital and AVI Food Systems as the 2012 United Way Community Care Day kicked off the agency’s annual fundraising campaign. The kickoff event was held at Riverside Park.
“I like to see all the white shirts out here today. It means the United Way is alive and well in Knox County,” said Campaign Chairman Mark Bennett. White United Way campaign shirts were distributed to all of the volunteers to wear as they worked in the community.
“Today we officially launched a campaign goal of raising $725,000 so we can create community change together. Folks, we can do it,” Bennett said addressing the volunteers. “With your efforts today, it will inspire others to get into their pockets and help.”
Bennett introduced United Way Executive Director Jen Odenweller who thanked a generous list of companies and individuals that raised $212,776 toward the campaign goal.
Program coordinator Lisa Rutter announced the many sites where the volunteers would be working. Volunteers from the Energy Cooperative and the Alcohol and Drug Freedom Center worked at the American Red Cross planting trees and landscaping. Rolls-Royce and First-Knox Bank volunteers spread rock in a parking lot and performed landscape cleanup at Interchurch Social Services in Centerburg.
