According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Ruby K. Dillon, 27, was traveling north on Ohio 3, when she “drifted off the right side of the road, lost control, and then slid sideways into the oncoming lane of traffic.”

Thomas A. Vernon, 64, Mount Vernon, was traveling southbound and struck Dillon’s vehicle. Both vehicles came to rest off the east side of the road, according to the patrol.

Dillon was pronounced dead at the scene. Blake Highman was flown by helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Vernon was transported to Grant Medical Center from Knox Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was listed in fair condition this morning.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and both children were secured in child safety seats, the patrol said.

Alcohol is not a factor in this accident, however, it is unknown why Dillon drove off the road. The accident remains under investigation while the patrol awaits the results of Dillon’s autopsy, being performed by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
