MOUNT VERNON — Over 200 trees will be planted this fall after Mount Vernon City Council agreed to advertise for bids for the tree planting project.
Larry Fogle, a representative of the Shade Tree and Beautification Committee announced the city was “pre-approved” for a local multi-year grant that will provide $65,000 to enhance the tree lines, city entrances and parks.
Fogle said this fall shade and ornamental trees will be planted on Mount Vernon Avenue and Edgewood Road between the Kokosing River and Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The commission is required to get permission from property owners to plant trees and Fogle said there were a few in the area that did not want trees in the front of their property.
Twenty one dogwood trees will be planted in Moundview Cemetery among the flowering crabapple trees. Fogle said eventually the crabapple trees will be removed.
Ornamental and shade trees will also be planted in Riverside, Arch and Hiawatha Park.
The committee will also beautiful the city’s entrance on Sandusky Street with the planting of trees near the city sign.
The committee will be meeting today in order to firm up plans for the fall planting. Fogle said 300 more trees will be planted next year as part of the multi-year grant request.
