MOUNT VERNON — Traffic has been moved to the south side of Coshocton Avenue while repairs are made to the catch basins along the north side of the street, Mayor Richard Mavis reported at his weekly press briefing.
Mavis said the problem was discovered by state inspectors last week.
City Engineer Cameron Keaton explained that the basins were not set in line with the slope of the roadway, causing there to be a dip in the pavement. The four basins have to be realigned and the sidewalk and curbing repoured.
The work is at the contractor’s expense and will not increase the city’s share of the cost, Keaton said. It should be completed by Wednesday.
Also on Coshocton Avenue, the new traffic signal at Sychar Road was activated Wednesday. The widened stretch of Coshocton will have three new lights when the work is finished. The others will be at the Verndale and Highland-Eastgate intersections.
These will be “red light” cameras that will remain green on the main through route until the camera warns of a vehicle approaching on the side street.
In the Parks, the mayor said director Geoff Oliver has reported that the repainting of the swimming pool at Hiawatha Park has been completed.
