MOUNT VERNON — Shutters were drawn on a beautiful 15-acre slice of Knox County over the weekend as closing ceremonies were held at Camp Cornish. For the past 66 years, the rustic property off Cornish Road in Monroe Township has been a center of Girl Scout camping and outdoor activities, but it is being closed by the Ohio’s Heartland Council as part of a consolidation process.
For area scouts and adult leaders, the loss of Camp Cornish is hard to accept and has left a bitter taste. Council CEO Tammy Wharton characterized the closing as “difficult and emotional,” saying it is part of an initiative to position the council, which covers 30 counties and includes the Columbus area, for the future. But Helen Rosser, a fixture on the scouting scene for five decades, spoke of the local impact.
“It’s a very sad day for us,” Rosser said, “and frankly, I think it’s ridiculous. The camp is paid for, and when we built the new lodge (in 2008) we thought it would be here for 100 years. Now we feel like we lied to our community and to the individuals who helped pay for the lodge.”
