MOUNT VERNON — House numbers on Fairgrounds Road may be seeing some changes following a public hearing Monday evening at the Memorial Building. Area residents gathered with city and county officials to hear a proposed plan drawn up for changing housing numbers, all for the purpose of safety.
“This has been in the works for a while, and we thought it was time we did something,” said Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chris Menapace. “The house numbers are incorrect, and this delays our response time. We need to determine what the best way is to correct this.”
Knox County Board of Commissioners President Allen Stockberger welcomed those attending the hearing. Residents attending were JoAnn Gibbs, David Kijak, and Jim and Patty Bertka. Also attending were county commissioners Roger Reed and Teresa Bemiller, Menapace, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis, Knox County Assistant Prosecutor Chip McConville and Knox County 9-1-1 Coordinator Rich Dzik.
“The issue at hand is we have a difference in numbers up and down Fairgrounds Road,” said Stockberger. “And it’s not only confusing, but it’s a safety issue as well.”
