MOUNT VERNON — The Ohio Supreme Court on Monday added the John Freshwater appeal to its formal docket schedule. Oral arguments are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.
During oral arguments, the court’s website explains, “an attorney for each side of a case will have an opportunity to make a presentation to the Court and answer questions posed by the Justices.”
Prior to the argument, as the News has reported, each side submitted a written legal argument outlining each party’s points of law. The justices will have read these briefs prior to argument and will be thoroughly familiar with the case, its facts and the legal positions that each party is advocating.
Because there is no set time period in which the justices must reach a decision, no one knows exactly when a decision will be handed down by the court in an argued case. However, “all cases argued during a term of Court are decided before the summer recess begins, usually by the end of June.”
All oral arguments are open to the public, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-seated basis.
