DANVILLE — Breaking a long-standing tradition of preserving Sundays for family and church, the Danville school board on Monday approved the participation of students in a Sunday morning co-educational activity.
Treasurer Mary Payne told the News on Tuesday that Superintendent Dan Harper recommended the board deny a request by Mock Trial advisor Jim Holmes to allow Mock Trial participants to attend a match on a Sunday morning. The board rejected that recommendation by a 3-2 vote. Charles Bratton and Darrel Severns supported Harper’s recommendation, while Carolyn Addair, Andrea Inverso and Brent Kaylor did not. Severns also voted against a subsequent resolution, which passed 4-1, to allow an overnight Saturday/Sunday field trip for Mock Trial.
Speaking of the current five-year financial forecast, Payne said, “right now we have a good [carry over] balance, due to the $400,000 in cuts we made last year.” She said in the next three to four years the district will have to draw down on the carry-over and will need to look at increasing revenue down the road. Payne said there remains uncertainty with regard to state [school] foundation money and it is also unclear as to how — or how much — casino money will be distributed to schools.
