MOUNT VERNON — Gordon Yance received recognition Monday night for his work on the tax appeals board. Yance was one of four people recognized during the First Friday event, but was unable to attend.
“I want to say how proud I am to be part of this community,” Yance said. “I’ve had excellent mentors and trainers ... and they encouraged me to participate.”
Council approved a measure that will permit the city to start the bid process to purchase three new police cruisers.
When asked if local dealers would have the opportunity to bid, Dave Glass, safety-service director said that in the past, local dealers have underbid the price the city can get through the state purchasing program.
Council approved a resolution that will transfer funds within the water department and wastewater department funds to cover 50 percent of the design costs for the new maintenance building. The remaining 50 percent will come from the city’s general fund to cover the street department’s portion, according to Terry Scott, city auditor.
The same measure moved funds to cover the cost of a new warning siren that will be placed on North Main Street, near Moundview Cemetery.
Also approved was a resolution to make supplemental appropriations including $5,000 from The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County for EMS equipment, $7,400 from Small Cities Grant Administration (grant was awarded from CDBG FY2012 Formula Grant); $11,000 for the CDBG Housing Program grant, also awarded in FY2012).
Downtown Manager Carrie Crouch addressed council and provided some highlights of the past several months regarding the Heritage Centre Association. The organization has 120 members. The First Friday events have been a success bringing about 1,000 people downtown during each event.
Cpl. Kit Morgan modeled the new police uniforms that will become official police attire on Nov. 1. The uniforms are made of lighter fabric than the current wool pants and will save the city money in the long run as they can be washed instead of dry cleaned. The News will provide more information regarding the uniforms later in the week.
The next council meeting will take place Monday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m.
