MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Commissioners Thursday gave their approval to a proposal from the Apple Valley Property Owners Association to replace the aging gatehouse on Apple Valley Boulevard at the intersection with Plank Drive.
The proposal was placed before the commissioners before the association proceeds with its plan because the old building sits on land owned by the county.
Association General Manager Jeff Harmer said the group wants to replace the building with a glass and stone veneer structure that will be used for things like seasonal exhibits and signs.
Harmer said they want to replace the structure because, although it is no longer used as a guard shack or gatehouse, it is “iconic” and creates the perception of an entrance to the development.
The commissioners had no objection to the plan which Harmer said may still be done this fall. If not now, then it will be done in the spring.
Harmer also asked about whether an old water tank in the area will be removed or will stay. Apparently, when a new water tank was erected about four years ago, there was talk of only keeping the old one for a year or two.
The commissioners said they will have to check on the status of the tank and get back to him.
