MOUNT VERNON — Another paved portion of the Heart of Ohio Trail connecting Centerburg and Mount Vernon — from Thayer Road to Columbus Road — was officially opened and dedicated Thursday.
Kim Marshall, director of the Knox County Park District, expressed her appreciation to everyone who helped make the project a success: Ohio Department of Transportation partners, park district personnel, project consultants, Kokosing Construction, county engineer Jim Henry and staff as well as the Knox County Commissioners.
Marshall said the occasion was a special one. “We’re looking at an old railroad bed,” she told those gathered at the Thayer Road access point. “Obviously the foundation of the railroad bed was the ties, and this trail is about tying together communities, just like the railroad did. We used to refer to our little towns here along this railbed as railroad towns, and now we refer to them as trail towns. It’s sort of a rebirth or rejuvenation for these small communities. It laces them into each other and is providing recreational opportunities for Knox County residents and their families. What’s also important about today, this is another leg on the Ohio to Erie Trail.”
