MOUNT VERNON — During the mayor’s weekly press briefing, Fire Chief Chris Menapace reported details of the new awards program adopted by the Fire Department.
Menapace said the department has not had a formal awards structure and this will be a way to recognizes employees for outstanding performance of the jobs and incidents of bravery.
There is also a civilian component, unveiled Thursday with the presentation of the medal to Abby Hammon for saving her brother and a friend from a fire at her home.
The Firefighter of the Year will be an annual award, presented each January. Menapace said a committee is in place setting criteria for the award and reviewing the nominations for the award, to be presented on the second Friday in January.
