MOUNT VERNON — Democrats gathered at Flappers Bar & Grille on Tuesday evening to watch the returns. As early votes were reported, cheers would break out when it was good news for the Democrats, a few groans when it was good news for the Republicans.
They weren’t just reacting to Ohio reports. They knew which national races were significant and cheers greeted reports that Democrats were winning in the Missouri and Massachusetts Senate races.
When Pennsylvania and Michigan tipped into the Obama column, there were big cheers, but those didn’t compare to the cheer when Sherrod Brown was declared the winner over Josh Mandel.
After 10 p.m., the races were still nip and tuck in the battleground states of Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Minnesota; and the party faithful were settling in for a long evening — at least until Flappers closed.
“If Ohio gets called before 1 a.m., I’ll be happy,” said Mary Rugola-Dye, president of the Knox County Democratic Women.
