MOUNT VERNON — Each year, all the students at Columbia Elementary School participate in a Veterans Day project to create cards for veterans. The project is a collaborative effort between the school, its students, art instructor Patti Coates, the Knox County Veterans Office and the South Vernon United Methodist Church.
The church donates the materials for the cards and church members deliver the finished products to Veterans Administration hospitals throughout Ohio. Kevin Henthorn, executive director of the Knox County Veterans Office, talks with the students about what Veterans Day means to those who served and how important the children’s cards are to those who receive them. Henthorn also has the task of selecting the top cards in each class and presenting the winners with “Salute” certificates.
