MOUNT VERNON — The national election is over, and so is the online student mock election held across the country and at Mount Vernon High School.
MVHS Social Studies instructor Rob Fetters said hundreds of the students voted in the Mock election, “and in doing so are significantly more likely to vote as adults.”
The student vote matched actual election results in most cases. For example, as in the “real” election, the students re-elected President Barack Obama [with a student vote of 49 percent as opposed to 40 percent for Mitt Romney.] The teens chose the same Ohio Supreme Court candidates as did their adult counterparts, and, like their elders, chose Bob Gibbs and Margaret Ann Ruhl for U.S. House of Representatives and Ohio House of Representatives, respectively.
On the other hand, the student choice for Ohio U.S. Senator was Josh Mandel, matching the Knox County vote but not the overall state vote.
With regard to the issues on the ballot, the students supported the Mount Vernon school levy, 54 percent to 37.5 percent while school district residents rejected that levy in actual balloting. Like other county voters, the students passed the county 9-1-1, parks, board of health levies and the Central Ohio Joint Fire District levy. Unlike voters statewide who rejected the issue, the students passed Issue 2 by a 44 percent to 28 percent margin.
