MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council was brought up to speed regarding the proposed changes to the county’s 911 system during a joint meeting with the Knox County Commissioners Monday night.
The process to consolidate the dispatch centers at the Mount Vernon Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office is expected to be complete by the end of 2013 but has been in the works for quite some time, said Chip McConville, assistant prosecutor.
The creation of one answering point will provide for nearly a quarter of a million dollars in annual savings.
The operation is funded through a 1/4 of a percent sale tax which was renewed earlier this month by voters. If there comes a time when expenditures are not covered by the levy funds, the entities that use the service will have to be billed to recover the costs. Billing could be determined by call volume per entity or service area population. This would include emergency medical services, fire departments and law enforcement.
