MOUNT VERNON — If you think you have the No. 1 dog in Knox County, you can get the dog tag to prove it, at least for 2013.
Knox County Dog License No. 00001 was placed on eBay by the Friends of the Knox County animal shelter, who are hoping to help the Animal Shelter raise money to buy needed equipment. To find the auction site, simply do a search for Knox-County-Ohio-dog-tag. The auction will end Dec. 6.
Friends of the Animal Shelter spokesman Phil Samuell said, “The shelter has needs and wants and budgets are tight, so we started a 501(c)3 to raise funds to help them buy new equipment or whatever.
“We have the No. 1 tag and if you win the auction you can take it down to the county auditor’s office and register your dog.
“We’ll also give you a letter certifying your bid amount, minus the $16 cost of the tag, as a charitable donation.”
Samuell said they hope to raise as much as $300 with the auction. He said they originally thought of having a silent auction, with people dropping bids off at the shelter, but they decided the online auction would be less trouble and make it easier for more people to bid. They can also check the site to see what bidding is up to and try again before the deadline.
One thing that is high on the list of needs for the shelter is a new autoclave for sterilizing surgical instruments.
“The shelter has a small one,” Samuell said, “which they will keep as a back-up. They could use a larger one, if anyone has a spare laying around; we can give you full credit for a charitable donation.”
A new autoclave can cost several thousand dollars, Samuell noted.
All dogs in Knox County over three months old must have a license by the end of January. The cost is $16 and they can be obtained either at the auditor’s office, at the Animal Shelter on Columbus Road or online. Click on dog licenses on the auditor’s website.
