HOWARD — Donations are currently being taken for the second annual Stockings for Seniors project, initiated in 2011 by Boy Scout Troop 344 member Ramsey McCarthy, now a sophomore at East Knox High School.

Undertaking this project as a way to help him achieve Eagle Scout status, McCarthy organized the assembling and donating of more than 300 Christmas stockings to area seniors last year. The traditional Christmas goodie bags were stuffed with useful items including scarves, gloves, toiletries, candies, ornaments, puzzles, etc. Stocking recipients in 2011 were homebound, in a nursing home or were a Hospice patient.

Sorting and packing of the items will take place Saturday at The Station Break on Howard Street. Stockings are to be delivered to area seniors on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Area residents wishing to make donations to the Stockings For Seniors project can drop items off at The Station Break from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, or from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Volunteers can also assist with the sorting from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday or with the packing of the stockings beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday. A goal for this year has been set for 500 stockings.

Items needed include toiletries, individual tea bags, hot chocolate, instant coffee, men’s and women’s socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, playing cards, dominos, large-print puzzle books, chap stick, lip stick, pencils, markers, nail polish, emory boards, Christmas jewelry, pins, watches, perfume or cologne and other comparable items.
