MOUNT VERNON — Seven months and $10 million after ground was broken in late April, Rolls-Royce Energy Systems unveiled its newest office building Wednesday morning at the corner of Sandusky and Chestnut streets.
Rolls President Andrew Heath did the honors at a formal ribbon-cutting, and he joined Rolls-Royce Vice President Glenn Richardson and Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis in addressing a gathering of several hundred employees.
“We pride ourselves at Rolls in making world-class products, and we also want to provide the right office environment for our workers,” Heath said. “This building has a purposeful design that has efficiency and comfort in mind. Along with the $35 million test facility built here in 2009, this demonstrates that although we are a global company, Mount Vernon is central to Rolls-Royce Energy.”
Roughly 300 of Rolls’ 1,000 local employees will begin moving into the two-story, 35,000-square-foot facility next week. When that move is completed, preparations will begin for demolition of the company’s aging Tech Center on North Adams Street.
“In the recent election, no matter what party a candidate was from, all politicians said that we need to create jobs,” Mavis said. “Well, we have a real jobs creator here in Rolls-Royce. The improvements they have carried out make Mount Vernon a better place to live and work, and we hope it will help to make the company more profitable.”
