MOUNT VERNON — “We try to impose order on disorder at a time people are having a life crisis.”
With that succinct description, attorney Jean Stacker summarizes the efforts of professionals who strive to ensure that people entitled to child support actually receive it. Stacker is a Knox County Assistant Prosecutor and works under the direction of Prosecutor John Thatcher, but her office’s location within the Department of Jobs & Family Services reflects her priorities.
Thatcher held the same job earlier in his career, and both he and Stacker exude an air of determination about protection of children who for various reasons live with only one parent or with guardians. This is a nation where half of first marriages end in divorce and one in four children under the age of 21 lives with one parent, and in Knox County there are 3,600 active child-support files.
