MOUNT VERNON — Waking Dreams Smoke Shop at 37 Public Square was the winner of the 2012 Heritage Centre Association’s Christmas window display contest. Judged and voted on by the public, 23 windows featured a variety of holiday scenes, 1950s themed decorations, beautiful store merchandise and Christmas cheer.
Framed with lights, Waking Dream’s window features an individual decorating a holiday mantle and fireplace for the Christmas season. Presents are stacked under a glowing silver tree while a reindeer prances in the background.
Kristin’s Kouture Kollection at 10 S. Main St. won second place. A vision in pink, this window features a feathery white tree decked out in pink and silver ornaments and pink ribbon. Silver chandeliers gird the ceiling while shiny pink packages adorn the floor. Store merchandise including jewelry and handbags are showcased while, perhaps most notably, the life-sized ’50s icon Marilyn Monroe wrapped in a feather boa dreams of a merry Christmas.
Williams Flower Shop at 114 S. Main St. took third place. Music of the 1950s is the emphasis of this window, with vinyl records hung on the beautiful pink and white trees and images of Elvis on the wall. Pink poinsettias line the base of the window with traditional greenery above. A pair of saddle shoes sits on a soda fountain table filled with flowers from the shop.
Honorable Mention went to new downtown business Deja Vu, located at 225 S. Main St. Its window features traditional images of winter and Christmas with a snowman, Santa Claus, Christmas tree and large silver snowflakes. Store merchandise is featured, including Ohio State clothing and purses.
“Thank you so much to all businesses who participated in the contest or decorated their storefronts in any way,” said HCA downtown manager Carrie Crouch. “Mount Vernon is lucky to have a beautiful downtown at all times of the year, but especially during the holiday season. That extra effort creates a special atmosphere for families to enjoy. I encourage everyone to really look at and appreciate the windows as they shop downtown.”
