MOUNT VERNON — As the new tax year started June 21, Knox County Treasurer Sandra Mizer informed city and county officials of a change in the order in which collected delinquent taxes would be distributed, a change which was not implemented without an opinion from the county prosecutor’s office.
Previously, special assessments, or tax liens, filed, for example, due to nonpayment of water/sewer bills, would be paid first due to a quirk in the software program in the treasurer’s office. Now, in keeping with the standard practice among all the counties in Ohio, delinquent monies collected go first toward the delinquent tax bill, then toward current taxes, then toward delinquent water/sewer bills.
