GAMBIER — Being the parent of a college student has its ups and downs, so picture this good news, bad news, scenario: Your son or daughter has been away from home for just a week, but has already made new friends and joined a campus organization. Its name is Beer and Sex.
Even the most open-minded parents might find that a bit sketchy, but at Kenyon College, Beer and Sex isn’t just about beer and sex. It’s about education, respect, peer support and making good decisions.
Saturday, members of the on-campus club and dozens of others from throughout the Kenyon community made a decision that at first glance seemed just as sketchy as their name. They gathered along Laymon Road near the Brown Family Environmental Center, partially disrobed, jumped into the Kokosing River, and then cheerfully paid for the chilly experience.
Some called it the Polar Plunge, while others dubbed it Freezin’ for a Reason. By whatever name, it was a fundraiser to benefit the Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission.
As one of 55 community action commissions statewide, Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland conducts a variety of projects and provides services to lower-income residents, children and seniors of Knox, Holmes, Coshocton and Ashland counties. Particular emphasis is placed on health services and affordable housing.
