MOUNT VERNON — Many Knox County families will be able to get much needed help when they need it thanks to the 2012 Food for the Hungry drive. This year’s 31st annual drive exceeded stated goals and raised $181,200 by the end of Saturday’s full day of activities as well as collecting 64 1/2 truckloads of food.

The Food for the Hungry goals for 2012 were to raise $160,000 and gather 50 truckloads of food.

The Food for the Hungry has one all-day “on the air” event each year. Last year, at the day’s end, the drive had raised $159,560.10. However, just like this year, the drive continued. So the 2012 drive will continue through the holiday season.

Many Mount Vernon Nazarene University students were a part of Saturday’s broadcast and events and on the air they spoke about what it meant to them to be part of a community pulling together.

WNZR’s Marcy Rinehart stated, “We are very proud of our team. We believe in what these ministries are doing.”

“In 10 years this might be the first time we’ve surpassed our goal this early, stated Interchurch director Joy Harris. “The food drive is what allows us to do our work all year long, so it’s more than a day.”
