MOUNT VERNON — The annual Shopping Cart Derby introduced an element of fun to the Food for the Hungry drive and everyone was a winner though not everyone went home with a trophy. Then again, if the “trophy” is collecting food and money to help local food banks extend a helping hand to local families, then everyone was a winner.

Four media teams competed in the event. A shopping cart “trophy” was awarded to WNZR for Fastest to the Square. They also collected 650 food items and $736.

The Mount Vernon News earned a trophy for the Most Money Collected. They collected 437 food items and $1,500. And Time Warner Cable came through for the Most Food Collected. They collected 5,128 food items and $25.

WMVO didn’t take home a shopping cart trophy but they did contribute to the food for the hungry drive as they participated in collecting food and money along their route.
