MOUNT VERNON — Consistent with the entire church’s value of ministry through a servant’s heart, the Mary and Martha’s care group raised funds this year to help make Christmas a little merrier for children who might otherwise do without this year. The group spent fellowship time Monday wrapping gifts for children in five families.
Mary and Martha’s (M & M’s) formed two years ago at Covenant Christian Church of God when, as leader Pat Jarrell stated, “The Lord laid on my heart to start something for the needy families of our church and to do something special for Christmas.”
Last year they raised money by making and selling pre-lit Christmas wreathes and providing gifts for children in four families. This year they had two fundraisers: A Hobo Dinner in April and then this fall they made and sold cookbooks.
The Hobo Dinner was a big hit when they served a variety of beans, coleslaw, and cornbread on tin pie plates and newspaper covered tables, with weeds for bouquets, and the women all dressed as hobos.
