MOUNT VERNON — A foot chase resulted in the apprehension of two suspects in a series of vehicle break-ins Tuesday morning. The incidents were reported on Pine Street, Columbus Road and Newark Road, Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. George Hartz reported.
Hartz said a vehicle owner on Pine Street spotted someone breaking into his vehicle and chased him to the back of his property, where the suspect jumped a fence and got away.
He provided a description to the officers who responded to the report, and they checked the area and spotted a figure running who fit the description. The police pursued on foot, finally catching the individual in the area of 243 Newark Road.
Police recovered some items that had been reported stolen and the suspect apparently provided the name of another youth, who was picked up at his home.
The youths were questioned, but have not yet been charged. Hartz said a report will be prepared for the prosecutor’s office and the juvenile prosecutor will determine what charges will be filed.
The youths were released into the custody of relatives.
The vehicles were apparently entered between midnight and 8 a.m. Tuesday. Four officers were sent to the area when a report was received of persons breaking into vehicles.
A woman’s teal wallet, a pink and white metal cigarette case with a skull design and $5 to $10 in change were reported taken. In one case, a car was entered, but nothing taken.
